🗒️ Fieldnotes on Leadership: Moving Beyond Hardworking & Servant Leadership 🗒️

Hi Reader,

I spent a lovely three weeks in Thailand in June, soaking in time with my mom and other relatives (including a story of hair & motherly love with self-critical voices and redemption). And before you think of my life as a bundle of happiness and adventure, know that our household is emerging from quarantine zone with both my daughters having COVID and happily asymptomatic. I somehow am continuing to test negative though am in week three of cough & cold symptoms. Such is life and it continues to teach me loons on how not to power-through work commitments.

In exciting book news, I’ve been working with a wonderful agent for the past six months and my book proposal for Hardworking Rebels: How to Lead and Succeed as Asian American Women went out on submission to multiple publishers in June. While fiction authors typically write their full manuscripts for publishers to evaluate, non-fiction authors create a business plan for their book including details such as target audience, market sizing, comparable books, and a marketing & publicity plan. In addition, the proposal contains the full book outline, chapter descriptions, and two to three complete chapters. It’s been a ton of work and I’m now in the nail-biting waiting period. We’ve seen six rejections come in so far and are awaiting more news. It’s all a part of the process.

Regardless of the outcome, this focus on Asian American women has helped hone my business including providing content for the Harvard Business Review article below and providing new coaching tools and workshop techniques to try in my next women’s retreat at the end of September.

I’ve worked with and supported many purpose-driven leaders. They are passionate individuals who continue giving their energy to build up their teams, their peers, and their families. Yet sometimes, this can come at the expense of their own leadership, leading to overwhelm and burnout. This Harvard Business Review article suggests makes a alight mental shift from:

It talks about establishing shared purpose with tactical tips involving employee interactions, decision making, and coaching.

Heroine’s Journey Retreat

There's only a couple of spots open for our women’s leadership retreat, The Heroine’s Journey, from Sept 29 – Oct 2 in Mendocino, California. All of the current heroines would consider themselves advocates of servant leadership, and the programming will focus on growing their personal and professional impact. The retreat will both create space for adventure and environment-driven learning amidst the redwoods and ocean, while also teaching the five key facets of integrated leadership — spaciousness, flow, connection, inner wisdom, and outer presence.
